About the Millet Crops: Crops comprising sorghum, pearl millet, and small millets (6 no.) such as finger millet, little millet, Kodo millet, barnyard millet, foxtail millet, and proso millet are generally referred as millets. Millets are nutri-cereals that are highly nutritious, rendering health benefits like reduced blood sugar level (diabetes), blood pressure regulation, thyroid, cardiovascular and celiac diseases. However, their uptake remains low due to various gaps in processing of millets and poor linkages to markets. In order to increase the feasibility of millets, processing interventions are attempted to remove the inconveniences by developing products, diversifying processing technologies and standardizing various processing machines by the Center of Excellence (CoEs) established by Deptt. of Agric. & cooperation, GoI. at IIMR, Hyderabad for last two decades.
In this context, ICAR- Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad is celebrating Foundation Day on 9th February 2017. The function aimed at showcasing and reviewing the technologies developed by IIMR during the past year, while rededicating ourselves for the cause of millets to provide food & nutritional security.
